I am a defender of anything
I use this website less and less, although the real reason is that I’m always busy doing a ton of things, or wasting time on silly stuff, haha. You’re probably wondering why I used to have “defender of free culture” in my profile and why I removed it. Well, I’ll explain it in this short post, and I’ll keep it brief since I don’t want to spend an hour writing this.
Why did I consider myself a defender?
The text I put in my profile, “defender of free culture,” has its origins practically since I started my life as a programmer, I think when I was 11 or
- I was a big fan of open-source programs and Linux, and I dreamed of being someone like that, capable of creating something useful for everyone. After researching things like copyright and licenses, among other things, I decided to call myself a defender of free culture and, at the same time, make all my projects free.
For me, that title was a way to do something better for people, or try to, since I never wanted it to have a political connotation, as I hate politics for its hypocrisy and for causing us all to increasingly divide into factions of supposedly superior morality.
Why did I decide to stop calling myself that?
One simple reason: I didn’t want to be considered a person of superior morals, left-wing, or anything political, since, as I just mentioned, I hate politics. Furthermore, a simple title like that could get me into trouble because I’m supposedly supposed to uphold a moral standard of something right, when that was never my intention.
Like everyone else, I make mistakes, and that’s why I always try to improve. Never call me superior to you or any group of people; I’m just me. I don’t share your worldview, and that’s okay. Besides, I’ve recently been contributing to non-free projects, which isn’t a bad thing in itself, but because of a title I naively chose when I was just a pre-teen, I could end up getting burned at the stake.
Conclusion
I’m not a defender of free culture, and I’m not an defender for anything. I don’t want people to think I’m something I’m not just because of a stupid title I naively chose as a preteen. I’m just a programmer who wants to help others and have some fun, not someone who’s trying to have some kind of moral superiority that ultimately serves no purpose.
I have made many mistakes in my life, and giving myself the title of “defender of free culture” is one of them.
